“Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel!” It should be clear by now that we know that Christmas is coming! Look around you. There are so many decorations, lights, and even ugly sweaters in some circles! And depending on where you live and work, the smells of this glorious time have already filled the air with sweet and delectable aromas of baked goods, soups, and candies, and, in some circles, that one-of-a-kind fragrance of tamales. (Apologies to those unfamiliar with this exquisiteness, please conduct an internet search.)
There are also the words of Christmas. These are not just ordinary sounds, either. These are the words of comfort, joy, and resolution for everything we carry that allows anxiety to creep into our souls. When we attune our hearts to these sounds, we begin to understand the real mystery of this great time now almost upon us. Spend some time in real, staggering silence before Christmas Eve. Try even to hear your heart beating. That is where God speaks. Listening is how prayer begins. Our Christmas gift to God is responding in action: “For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” With just a few more days, open your heart to the wonders of this holy time. Listen carefully.
“Let us keep Christmas beautiful without a thought of greed, that it might live forevermore to fill our every need, that it shall not be just a day, but last a lifetime through the miracle of Christmastime that brings God close to you.” Ann Schultz
